Mashed Potatoes Expo

In March 2011 Popps Packing and The Lot were proud to present Mashed Potatoes: An expo. Displayed expo style in the the Popps Packing gallery, this free event highlighted more than 30 inovative, grass roots, cultural organizations happening now in Detroit.

There were name tags, mashed potatoes, homemade sausage, locally roasted coffee, a raffle and much more. Hundreds of people came out to learn about the amazing things happening in their backyards and to meet each othere face to face.

Thanks to everyone who participated and contributed to the event!

Special thanks to Motor City Brewing Works and Slows BBQ for donating spirits and sustenance and to Steve Cherry of Hamtramck Radio for providing the amazing jams all night.

"I am a Michigan based artist, working in the Detroit area. My work is influenced by a love of the movies and with each painting or construction, I am essentially making a short film while using only static images. I will often pull images out of a 2 dimensional surface then carve them or cut them out of wood then paint or draw them and try to reconfigure them back in to the work, thus making a 3 dimensional painting that tries to also work as sculpture, but I most definitely think of my work as a painting first.

I am trying to capture in most pieces a particular moment. A moment of joy, of sorrow, of loneliness, panic, triumph or isolation, to name a few."

Memory Field

Memory Field is a public art project by Graem Whyte and Faina Lerman.

The project site is Calimera Park, located in N.E. Detroit on Joanne Street between Pinewood and Lapin within the Osborn Neighborhood.

In response to the communities request for a rememberance stone , a 100ft earth ripple was created out of soil and low-mow micro clover. A 1700 gallon cistern was installed underground to collect water for the community garden and the ripple.

The Osborn neighborhood is a culturally diverse community of a moderate-

income children and families. It is one of the few neighborhoods in the city that has seen a

growth in population of 11%. The majority of that growth was in children under the age of 18.

There are more children concentrated in the Osborn neighborhood, than anywhere

else in the state, per capita.

Process....

The bobcat had a hard time moving through this muddy swamp and the cistern had to be repositioned due to the soaking wet earth.

thinking...
Whats left of a baseball field in the overgrown and mostly neglected Calimera Park.
